President Wang Shenghong

Dr. James S. C. Chao, distinguished guests, teachers and students,

Good morning!

Today, we are much honored to have the delegation of our renowned Chinese-American, Dr. James S. C. Chao, Chairman of Foremost Maritime Corporation, U.S.A, visit our school. Here, on behalf of all the teachers and students of Fudan University, I’d like to extend our warmest welcome to the delegation and best wishes!

What a fascinating blossoming season! May is a month of hard working and dream coming true. We find the month of May is a season of success to Dr. Chao for his past impressive performance in the field of maritime. In May of 1949, he finished the maritime courses and set out for the wide blue ocean and thus started his career with an internship navigation; In May of 1958, he ranked the top in a captain examination held in Taiwan that created a new score record for such examination that ever had been held in China, henceforth, he was honored “No. 1 Captain”; In May of 2004, President Hu Jintao met with Dr. Chao in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing and thanked him for his concern and support for the country’s shipbuding industry as well as his active participation in pushing this Chinese industry into global market. Also in the same month, he was enrolled into “International Maritime Hall of Fame” by the United Nations on the ground of his great contribution for that undertaking in the globe; In May of 2005, Dr. Chao was awarded “Ellis Island Medal of Honor” issued by American government which represents the highest praise for immigrants in America.

The month of May is also special to Fudan University. It is in May of 103 years ago that Mr. Ma Xiangbo, who led a group of patriotic students with the hope of “save the nation through education”, founded "Fudan Public School”, which the university was initially known as. Now, not long before the upcoming May celebration of Fudan’s 103th anniversary, we gather together for Dr. Chao’Speech, in which he will share with us his rich experience and insights of life.

No pains, no gains. I think Dr. Zhao’s life-long success story can be a vivid textbook to encourage students of Fudan to fight for success. His experience and idea for career, life, education of children and return to the society are worth our careful taste. Ms. Elaine Lan Chao, the eldest daughter of Dr. Chao, currently serves as the 24th United States Secretary of Labor in the Cabinet of President George W. Bush. She is the first Chinese American, and the first Asian-American woman to be appointed to a President#QuotationMarks#s cabinet in American history. This time, other three daughters of Dr. Chao also come to our university with their visit. They are Ms. Christine Chao, Ms. Grace Chao and Ms. Angela Chao, who have also achieved a great achievement respectively in law, education and business. They are really excellent models for our students to learn from! Since today they are going to make speeches, too, I believe, every student here will receive a fortune of knowledge and spirits from the following speeches of wisdom. I sincerely hope you, my students, will get inspired for your way to find an engine for life journey, as well as for your participation in a new centennial development of our university.

Last but not the least, welcome and thanks again to the delegation. I hope you enjoy the visit and return home with a beautiful memory. Wish all of you happiness, cheerfulness and success.

Thank you!
