Focus on Asia with a livelihood-oriented approach and a globalized horizon

Thanks to the reputation and influence of the previous two rounds, “Shanghai Forum 2008”, which is scheduled to inaugurate on May 25, 2008, has aroused increasing attention from all circles of society. As is reported by the University media, the Forum will provide several channels to share the guests’ insights with all the faculties and students of Fudan University, as well as with the invitees from home and abroad. Moreover, the host of the Forum warmly welcomes and highly appreciates the participation of all the faculties and students of Fudan University. Up to now, the Forum has won great support from renowned media such as Bloomberg L.P., Phoenix Satellite Television, China Daily and Sina.com .

The theme of Shanghai Forum this year is “Economic Globalization and the Choice of Asia: Transition, Growth and Welfare”. The themes of the six sub-forums are listed as “Regional Economic Growth and Equality Policy”, “Financial Transition of Asia”, “Sustainable Development of Society and Economy”, “Economic Transformation for Asia: the International Environment and Institutional Restructuring”, “Strategic Choices for Asian Cities under Globalization”, and “Asia’s Economic Transformation and International Order”.

On the morning of April 10th, “Shanghai Forum 2008” Preparatory work conference was held, with the preparations of all sub-forums going well. Besides,head-counting of guests and invitees from global political, business and academic circles have also begun. Up to April 9th, the number of confirmed guests has amounted to 187, including 76 domestic guests and 111 overseas guests. The invitation list covers distinguished experts, entrepreneurs, governmental officials from home and abroad, as well as the senior representatives from UN, World Bank, and other important international organizations. Other guests include famous economists from Harvard University, Yale University, Stanford University, Chicago University, Waseda University, National University of Singapore, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The number of the guests coming to Shanghai for discussion is estimated to reach about 300. Moreover, “Shanghai Forum 2008” has received 55 papers from all circles home and abroad up to April 9th.

Compared to former rounds, this forum is innovative in many aspects. For example, the preparatory committee of the forum is seeking to build close connection with many important academic institutions. Currently, Yale University, Waseda University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong have become international strategic cooperative partners for Shanghai Forum. These institutions have begun to help the work of sub-forums in terms of finding hosts and making preparations. To be more specific, the Chinese University of Hong Kong has become the co-sponsor of the sub-forum under the theme of Strategic Choices for Asian Cities under Globalization. Professor Yue-man Yeung from Shanghai-Hong Kong Development Institute of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Professor Wang Guixin,director of the Population Institute of Fudan University will host the sub-forum together in order to enhance academic exchange and cooperation between Shanghai and Hong Kong institutions of higher education.

Apart from routine meetings and forums, the forum has added two special roundtables to discuss the focus issues of society, listed as Affordable Housing, Energy and Development. One roundtable is on Affordable Housing under the title Ushering a New Era of Affordable Housing: Opportunities and Challenges, while the other is on Energy and Development under the title Driving Chinese Economy: Energy Choices under Soaring Oil Prices.

“Shanghai Forum 2008” has enjoyed media#QuotationMarks#s concern and support. Signed media partners include China Daily, Sina.com and Phoenix Satellite Television. There are several other news media who have contacted the publicity department, expressing their will to report the Forum. Shanghai Forum Newsletter has been published on a regular base by the Forum’s secretariat. Meanwhile, the official website of Shanghai Forum keeps updating so as to inform the public of the latest news of preparations.

On April 10th held “Shanghai Forum 2009” Theme Symposium. Participating leaders and experts heatedly discussed the focus issues of Asia and the world.

The symposium was attended by Prof. Shaode Qin, Chancellor of Fudan University, Dr. Zheng Xu, Vice President of Fudan University, the Pricipals of Sub-forums, representatives from relevant departments including the University Publicity Department of Party Committee, the Liaison Office and the Office of Foreign Affairs.
